University teaching for a balanced society
This workshop proposes a paradigm about learning which begins with the traditional values of citizenship and human dignity, recognizing the imperatives of economic reality, but at the same time focusing on learners as individuals with needs and aspirations that are about their whole lived experience, in short about that very old fashioned idea of the good life.

How can university teaching help to make a difference in the lives of the teachers and the students in order to help building up a better / more balanced society?
In this workshop we will provide concepts of “the good life” and discuss their effects on society, universities and individuals in teaching and learning processes.
From this theoretical basis we will think through situations in which we faced a lack of respect and recognition and hence did not feel we were being granted human dignity to the extend it is due to all equal human beings. We will also work on how to deal with this kind of situation and reflect on the possible consequences on individuals (teachers and students), the university as an organization and wider society.

This interactive workshop, conducted in English, will be facilitated by:
Dr. Séamus Ó Tuama, Head of Adult Continuing Education and a senior lecturer in the Department of Government at University College Cork, Ireland. His primary research focus is on respect, recognition and human rights.

Dr. Edith Kröber, Head of the Centre for Higher Education and Lifelong Learning, University of Stuttgart. Her focus in practice and research are educational and organizational development, lifelong learning, evaluation and leadership in higher education institutions.

The seminar takes place at the University of Stuttgart.
